Give to PNJ > Gifts of Real Estate

The gift of your interest in a vacation home, a building lot or other real estate that you or your family no longer need or enjoy can be a tax-wise way to support Preservation New Jersey’s programs. Donors reluctant to sell appreciated property because of substantial capital gains find that giving the property to charity allows them to avoid capital gains tax and provides an income tax charitable deduction.(The gift may also be made under your Will or revocable trust and provide a significant charitable deduction to your estate.)

It is also possible to give an interest in a home or farm, yet live on the property for your life. In this type of gift, the donor gives the future ownership (a “remainder interest”) of a residence or farm to charity by deed, but keeps the right to use and enjoy the property for life (a “life estate”). The donor receives an income tax charitable deduction for the actuarial value of the charity’s right to receive the property upon the donor’s death.

Donors should expect that PNJ will sell real property gifts and use the proceeds to support its programs. In rare cases, PNJ may not be able to accept a gift because of environmental or other concerns. If you would like to know more about charitable gifts of real property, please contact our Executive Director.
