Explore the 1877 Ballantine Barn

Host(s): GlaxoSmithKline; Henderson Constructors, Inc.; Restoration Technologies of New Jersey, LLC; Eclectic Architecture, LLC

Number of guests: 5

Price: $25/person

Date and Time:

Saturday, May 19, 2012; 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Location:

Ballantine Barn, Parsippany-Troy Hills

 Ballantine

Take a guided tour of the Ballantine Barn to learn about the specific project and barn rehabilitation and adaptive re-use. In the late 19th century, the family members of the Ballantine Brewery in Newark were looking westward to build their country estates.  What is now a campus of GlaxoSmithKline was the estate of Peter Ballantine in 1877, and today retains a spectacular beech tree and a large barn from that era.  GlaxoSmithKline has recognized the significance of these resources and has made an extraordinary commitment to their conservation.  After 130 years, the barn was severely deteriorated, but GlaxoSmithKline decided against the demolition of the abandoned structure.  Under the management of Henderson Constructors, Inc., and direction of Eclectic Architecture, LLC, an emergency stabilization and building envelope restoration was completed by Restoration Technologies of New Jersey in the Fall of 2010.  The next phase is an adaptive re-use campaign to allow for the barn to actively be used as part of the GSK campus.

Michael J. Margulies, AIA of Eclectic Architecture and Adam Wengryn of Restoration Technologies of New Jersey will lead the tour and will discuss the barn structure, the problems and discoveries in the framing, the challenges of the project and the possibilities for adaptive re-use.

NOTE: The tour will require sturdy shoes as guests will be taken through the project worksite.
