Annual Appeal

Preservation New Jersey celebrated the 45th Anniversary of the organization in 2023. It is a testament to our membership, and other preservation-minded individuals throughout the state that have supported and responded to the operation of PNJ throughout the decades. We thank you and look forward to many more years of educating, advocating, and supporting the people and places of New Jersey as they work to preserve our historic treasures.

This year we also celebrate the Preservation New Jersey Board of Trustees who, in a time of reorganization, have demonstrated a new professionalism in preservation, increased programming, and provided an opportunity at in-person events for our members and the public at large to participate with us.  At the end of 2022, we welcomed our new Executive Director, Kelly Ruffel, who brings experience in the field of historic preservation, much enthusiasm, and new initiatives to propel PNJ forward.  The Board has also increased in size to include new Trustees that have varied backgrounds in preservation and want to further PNJ’s mission.  Another new initiative – PNJ has “Office Hours” online each Wednesday from 6 until 8 pm.  Meet with our Executive Director and other Trustees and bring your questions and comments. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom!

Sharing Our Success

PNJ hosted the annual New Jersey Preservation Excellence Awards on November 30, 2023. We recognized 15 different individuals and projects that have represented the best in New Jersey Preservation this year.  Our celebration was held at the Masker’s Barn in Union County, where award winners and supporters enjoyed an evening of refreshments, networking, and meeting our new awardees.

Showcasing the Underrepresented

The list of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Properties for 2023 was announced on June 4, 2023 at the historic Spermaceti Cove No. 2 Life Saving Station within the Gateway National Recreation Area – Sandy Hook. This highly popular program attracted media attention that will further the work of those sites noted.  A new addition in 2023 has been PNJ connecting with our 10 Most organizations to assist them in their exposure and efforts to save their sites.

Building Knowledge

During 2023, we continued our popular “Q&A with PNJ” series with both educational programming as well as visits with our previous 10 Most Sites.  These programs are offered virtually one time a month and are informative as well as fun!  This year we have also increased our in-person walking tours – PNJ hosted walking tours of Somerville, Freehold and Perth Amboy and looks forward to more tours in 2024.  Be our partner as we offer engaging educational events!
