The Former Perth Amboy Police Headquarters, a two-story brick building with neoclassical limestone and terra cotta details, was built in 1911. The building's exterior is in fair condition, with minor ivy coverage and some cracks in the decorative features, though the brick remains intact. It exemplifies early 20th-century industrial architecture, featuring elements typical of Renaissance Revival style, such as terra cotta quoining, lintels, sills, and an entrance arch. The building also reflects Perth Amboy's industrial history, particularly the influence of the Roessler & Hasslacher Chemical Company, which played a major role in the city's economy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
As the last remaining structure from this industrial era, the building is a rare reminder of the city's past. Currently, the City of Perth Amboy is seeking to sell the property to the Kushner Companies for $4-5 million, far below its market value. The developer plans to demolish the headquarters to make way for a 602-apartment complex, subject to further approvals. If approved, demolition could occur as early as this year or next, further erasing the city's industrial heritage.
The Former Perth Amboy Police Headquarters is a surviving link to the city’s industrial and architectural heritage. Preserving it safeguards an important piece of Perth Amboy’s identity and honors its role in early 20th-century industrial development.
